Beckwoman’s

Beckwoman’s at 1314 Commercial Drive in Vancouver, BC is a destination, not just a store. It is floor-to-ceiling full of everything your inner hippy would love and then some. I go there for all the fun(ny) stuff like the fridge magnet I got for my filing cabinet at work (the photo here). Some of the magnets, bumper stickers and t-shirts are pee-your-pants funny. There’s other stuff too, like batik dresses, tie-died shirts, beaded curtains, sarongs, incense, and jewelry and knick-knacks from around the globe. Truly a fun place to go and spend a little of your hard-earned money. Warning, though… if you’re claustrophobic, this isn’t the store for you.

UPDATE: I understand she’s now only online and the store is no longer open.

VERY POOR!! For better or worst, now at least I know that I and my friend are not alone upon this first visit. The “greet”, if you will, we got when we stepped in was, “i’m not opened for browsing, what are you looking for!”, someone yelled from nowhere. A few minutes later, before we got to finish looking at what I told her I was seeking, and was prepared to inquire about a purchase on some jewelry, the same lady shouted seemingly only to us, “WE ARE CLOSING! WE ARE CLOSING!”

We are visiting from Ottawa and we went in the store to look, as did 2 people who went in just before us and a few people who walked in behind us, we were all kicked out because we were “just looking” and she said the “store is closing now”. It was like she was having a panic attack. Very bizarre. Was going to go back before we left Vancouver, but now that I know this is the history of the store, I won’t make the trek back. I probably would have bought a few things. But how do I know what I am looking for unless I look at what she has!?? Holy CRAP lady!!!!! REALLY! how does she survive with this craziness?Even my 7 year old son thought the whole experience was way out there and bizarre!!

this store owner is a nut case for sure. i returned a long sleeve t shirt because one cuff on the sleeves was really tight and the other cuff was really loose. the owner said oh don;t worry we can fit it for you. when i picked up my shirt a couple of weeks later and saw the sewing job(it looked like a 2 yr old had sewn it) i told the owner i did not want it, that she had ruined it, and i wanted my $ back. she threw the shirt at me and said good luck ! i contacted the better business bureau but did not get anywhere. i tell whoever will listen, not to shop there.

my grandson and i were in the store and i was looking to buy something in there store.i went to the counter to buy what i liked and just happened to put ten pennies in with the rest of the cash that i was paying with and got the pennies refused.so iwas so upset and gathered my money and started to walk out of the store because she refused some of my mixed canadian currancey.on my way out she made a rude comment about where i can put my money.i live on comercial drive and had spent numerous amount of dollars there over the years and did like the store.not anymore.i will share this with family and friends about there unprofessionalizim and rudeness.i work with the public and act in a respectful manner so that my customers will return in the near future.if you own a buisiness please do not be like these people with rudeness and disrespect to the public.attituted will bankrupt your buisiness.my grandson is 6 years old and questioned me about why was this woman mean to us.how do you tell a 6 year old to stay out of stores where people ignorant.i guess be honest with them and say these people are not nice and we will not shop there anymore which is very sad to say that our children of the future will have witness this.what are we teaching our children and our comunities.where is the peace and love in this store.i grew up in the hippy era and never ever treated anyone like beckwomans has.time to grow up beckwomans.i dont care if yr having a bad day or what.we the people keep your buisiness open.time to shop elsewhere.peace and love still exists but not in your store. vancouver,b.c.

just so everyone knows, the owner is legitimately off her rocker, one of those ‘businessman/woman’ types who’s only in it for themselves, and deals in all sorts of shady business with properties, never mind her store. she chronically treats people badly, and imagine how she treats the people she does business with.

I also had a terrible experience with the store owner today. This is a store I used to love to frequent, though it was not until today that I encountered the rude, aggressive store owner because I wanted to buy something. I had asked to see something and she started out by saying that it was a certain price but if I wanted we could negotiate it for a few dollars cheaper. When I tried on said item, she noticed that it may need to be altered and said she would do it ‘free of charge’, before I had a chance to agree, she had started cutting the edges of it. When I showed hesitance because I hadn’t completely decided on buying it and she became extremely cold and said ‘well, you took interest and I thought there had been a commitment made, you can’t go back on it now, I’ve already cut it’. I hadn’t even paid yet. Then, when I did agree to pay, she overcharged me, when I asked about her comment about making it a few dollars cheaper she claimed that she did (but the math didn’t add up) and ‘plus, i’m altering it for you’. I left feeling pressured, humiliated and angry. Not going back there.

My wife and I and my 23 month year old daughter tried to visit the store. We are from kelowna. We had just stepped in, when we were being watched like a hawk, and since we had not been to the store we did not know what to expect in the store. We were asked to leave because we wanted to browse. I grew up and east van just up the road from the store. I can’t believe any store owner would treat anyone like that. I will make sure to tell people never to go to that store.
Her excuse for kicking us out is that the store was closed for people who want to browse.
